WHAT WE DO
We assess, investigate and test soils and construction materials so as to provide optimum solutions – an essential design component, vital for any construction project’s success.
We are SANAS accredited and all undertakings are handled in a professional manner by our well qualified staff.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
- Investigate and determine the behaviour and suitability for construction of on-site materials.
- Locate nearby sources (such as borrow pits) for additional natural materials required for the project.
- Provide the fill material design and specifications, and monitor during construction.
ROAD SURFACING
- Provide the surfacing material design and specifications, and monitor during construction.
CONCRETE
- Test constituent materials (cement, sand, stone & water) to determine their suitability.
- Design the optimum concrete mix and monitor specification adherence during construction.
- Test existing structures to determine their strength.

OVERVIEW
SOILLAB is a sample testing facility, which also caters for on-site testing. The scope includes a wide range of fields within the Civil Engineering industry. Visit our services section on our website for more details on the services we provide.
SOILLAB also provides unique services for the Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical industry by having a rock and geotechnical laboratory.
SOILLAB is an ISO/SANS 17025 accredited testing laboratory (T0284). This stringent international applies to all laboratories performing tests and/or calibrations.
SOILLAB currently has its base in Pretoria, South Africa. We also have various site laboratories catering to the needs of our clients across the country and abroad.
SOILLAB employs close to 150 staff members in South Africa. This includes registered Professional Engineers, Technologists and Technicians, as well as skilled and semi-skilled operators. Together with a solid experience base, this has given SOILLAB an enviable reputation for technical excellence in laboratory and field testing of construction materials and materials surveys, as well as geotechnical, chemical, rock mechanics and agricultural testing. SOILLAB has built its reputation by providing clients with comprehensive and cost-effective services including innovative solutions to special technical needs.
SOILLAB is a SANAS accredited Testing Laboratory (T0284), as per the accreditation schedule.
SOILLAB is a BBBEE level 1 contributor.
HISTORY
SOILLAB was established in the late 1940s as part of a leading consulting engineering firm, VKE Consulting Engineers. VKE realised the need and demand for a dedicated specialist laboratory testing company and Soillab (Pty) Ltd was established and registered.
SOILLAB head office gained accreditation status with SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) in 2005 and is currently one of the laboratories with the most accredited tests in South Africa.
Vela VKE Engineers merged with SMEC, an Australian based engineering consultancy firm in 2012. In 2016 SMEC merged with Surbana Jurong Pte Ltd. Soillab retained its identity and enlarged its scope internationally.
